Rongai Route

The Quiet Northern Approach to Kilimanjaro

About

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is known for being quieter, drier, and less crowded than the southern routes, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a more remote experience. The route offers a gradual ascent which aids acclimatisation, and is well-suited for climbers with less high-altitude experience. The descent is completed via the Marangu Route. The 7-day version includes an extra acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn.

The northern approach via Rongai is drier and less crowded than the popular southern routes. It offers a completely different perspective of the mountain and a more remote, wilderness feel throughout the trek.

The Rongai Route descends via the Marangu Route, which means you experience two different trails — ascending from the north and descending through the rainforest on the southeastern side.
