Frequently Asked Questions About Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Most climbers spend 6–8 days on Mount Kilimanjaro, depending on the route chosen. For better acclimatization and higher summit success rates, we recommend the 7 or 8-day Lemosho Route. Marangu typically takes 5–6 days, Machame 6–7 days, and Lemosho 7–8 days.
Kilimanjaro summit success rates range from 65% to over 90%, depending on the route and itinerary length. Routes with better acclimatization, such as the 8-Day Lemosho Route, offer the highest success rates. Proper pacing, hydration, and experienced guides significantly improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
The cost of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro typically ranges from $1,500 to $4,000 per person, depending on the route, group size, accommodation, and services included. Most packages include park fees, professional guides, porters, meals, camping equipment, and airport transfers.
No. Mount Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek and does not require mountaineering experience, ropes, or climbing equipment. However, good physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and determination are important for a successful summit. Our experienced guides monitor your health and safety throughout the climb.
Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) is the most common challenge on Mount Kilimanjaro. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite. The best prevention is choosing a longer route for proper acclimatization, drinking 3–4 liters of water daily, hiking slowly ("pole pole"), and following your guide's advice. Some climbers also use Diamox after consulting their doctor.
The best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons: January to March and June to October. These months offer clearer skies, less rainfall, and excellent trekking conditions. While Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, April–May and November are generally wetter and more challenging.
The Marangu Route is often considered the most comfortable because it offers hut accommodation instead of camping. However, the Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the best route for beginners due to its longer itinerary, better acclimatization profile, and higher summit success rate.
Most climbers should begin training at least 8–12 weeks before their Kilimanjaro trek. Focus on hiking, stair climbing, cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and endurance. Training with a daypack and hiking on uneven terrain can significantly improve your summit chances.
